What to Expect During Your Safe LASIK Experience

When we chat with patients interested in LASIK, the question they ask us is usually the same:

“How Safe IS LASIK Surgery?”

As an ophthalmology practice, we want to ensure you have a safe LASIK experience and that doesn’t just mean on the day of your procedure. That means from the moment you step into our office for a consultation, until your last post-op visit. The safety of your eyes is our first priority.

Having concerns about the safety of LASIK surgery is completely normal. After all, you’ve only got two eyes and they’re… well… your eyes! Not only are you concerned about the safety of the procedure, we are too. This is the reason we go through a thorough consultation process before even scheduling you for surgery, as we strive to provide the safest LASIK Arizona has to offer.

What’s The Consultation Like?

Through various tests and exams, we can determine if you would make an excellent candidate for a safe LASIK procedure. This is the first step to better vision. And if you are not a candidate, then we can discuss other excellent vision correction options such as PRK or a refractive lens exchange (RLE).

How Do I Know The Procedure is Actually Safe?

Since it’s FDA approval 20 years ago, the results of LASIK have continuously improved, and we can give thanks to new technology and extremely experienced LASIK surgeons for that. In fact, according to the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, LASIK has an outstanding success rate of 96% of patients achieving 20/20 vision or better.

This new technology has provided the opportunity for quick, accurate and safe LASIK procedures.

The Blade-Free LASIK procedures we do include a customized treatment plan designed for your eyes. After all, no one’s eyes are exactly alike, so why should we correct them all the same? This is done following your consultation with our team, during a pre-operative evaluation of your eyes.

Then with this customized plan for your LASIK surgery, we enter your eyes’ specific details and use technology, developed originally by NASA, to track your eyes’ movements. So yes, this is some advanced technology. In fact, the lasers we use adjust thousands of times per second and follow your eye to ensure the corrections are right on point.

That means when your eye moves at all, the laser adjusts. And if you happen to move significantly (we get it, sneezes or coughs are natural), the laser will completely pause and can resume once you are back in position under the laser. We work only with extremely precise and accurate technology!

What Are The Risks?

Yes, LASIK is considered a safe procedure. But, as with any surgical procedure, there are always potential risks and a recovery period involved. The risks or potential complications associated with LASIK may include symptoms such as dry eye, glare or halos. If these do occur, they typically improve with time and post-op treatment, which we also offer in our offices.

Speaking of post-op… following your LASIK surgery, we want to make sure you are as comfortable as possible in order to enjoy your new vision. We encourage patients to go home and nap with their protective eyewear to prevent unintentional eye rubbing, and then return for their 1-day post-op appointment where we ensure everything looks great!

Through the use of some of the most advanced technology and close attention to the unique details of your vision, our surgeons are able to offer the better vision you’ve been looking for.

We encourage you to come visit us at either our Chandler or Mesa location to get all of your questions answered and to see if LASIK is the vision correction option for you!
