Renée C. Hanson, O.D., graduated from the University of Arizona in Tucson, receiving her BS in Molecular Biology. She then attended the Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon for her optometry degree. Following, Dr. Hanson completed her residency at the University of California at Berkeley with a focus in pediatric optometry and primary care.
In 2005, after spending a full year in the greater Bay area, Dr. Hanson joined a well-renowned ophthalmology practice in Berkeley. She went on to spend the next fifteen years of her career at the practice, further developing her skills in primary care, contact lenses, complex cornea cases, and cataract management. In addition to her skills development, Dr. Hanson piqued an interest in specialty contact lenses such as sclerals, multifocals, and hybrids. While at Berkeley, she worked closely alongside the corneal specialist in the practice. Dr. Hanson managed keratoconus cases, corneal transplant cases, and took a particular interest in pediatric ocular trauma cases. Dr. Hanson is an Arizona native, growing up in Gilbert. In 2018, she made the difficult decision to leave the Bay Area and her long-time practice in order to return home to Arizona.
Dr. Hanson joined the team at Swagel Wootton Eye Institute in 2019. Since joining, she has committed herself to providing our patients with excellent care in all aspects of optometric care. Dr. Hanson has a strong passion to continuously further her knowledge and skills. She brings out this quality in the entire patient care team at Swagel Wootton.
Dr. Hanson and her husband Shawn are ecstatic to be back home in Arizona to raise their two young children. Here, they are able to be close to family and enjoy recreational activities such as yoga, running, hiking, and camping. In addition to her optometric expertise, Dr. Hanson is a gourmet chef. She enjoys nothing more than entertaining friends and family with her latest creations.
